COVID-19 vaccine matchmaking in DRC - How UNICEF uses SMS to match people with vaccines
The Democratic Republic of Congo is one the most populated countries in Africa with an estimated population of close to 100 million people but also one of the least vaccinated against COVID-19 with less than 1% of its population fully vaccinated as of October 2021. In a country where less than 15% of the population is connected to the internet, the basic information about vaccination, including vaccination sites, is not readily available. To address the issue of access to information while bringing the vaccines where they are most needed, with GAVI financial support, and in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, UNICEF supported the DRC national vaccination program to create and launch an SMS pre-registration system for COVID-19 vaccination.
